Survival School Expedition 2003 Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru Well, we did it! Not only did we climb Mt Meru, but we also got everyone in the group up Mt Kilimanjaro. For those who have never tried high altitude climbing before, it is something to experience. Our guides were fantastic, the instruction was professional and first class in every respect and the trip was 100% successful. In due course we will be publish the photographs of the two mountains and the groups on them, but in the meanwhile, Survival School would like to thank everyone who joined us for an amazing trip. The friendship and laughter was fantastic. Was it THE trip of a life time? NO! It was A trip of a life time. There will be plenty more to come. | Africa offers a fine combination of high altitude trekking, game viewing and third world travel. Mt Kilimanjaro [5895 metres] is Africa's highest mountain and a spectacular sight. It is surrounded by rain forest and is home to many animals. We fly into Kilimanjaro airport [Tanzania] avoiding the arduous journey from Nairobi. Our expedition including Mount Meru [4556 metres] ensures that all members gain proper acclimatisation before attempting the highest mountain in Africa. | | Our selected route for Kilimanjaro is the six day ascent of the Machame Route. This is without doubt the most beautiful way to climb Kilimanjaro. The gradual ascent offers a fascinating variety of scenery and vegetation from rain forest and alpine moorland to crags and glaciers. Porters will carry the bulk of our group gear and personal kit, leaving us with the freedom to enjoy the expedition. The final ascent is started in darkness and the reward is a spectacular dawn view across the East Africa plains. Four camps will be placed en route allowing for better acclimatisation and the best chance for summit success. |
