The Aim of this course is to teach you the skills needed to survive and thrive in the wilderness and woodlands.  You will learn the skills and techniques to light fires, identify edible plants, build shelters, make traps and snares, purify water, prepare rabbit, fish and birds and use knives and saws safely and efficiently.  This Level 2 Bushcraft, Survival and Wilderness Livings Skills course is accredited by the NCFE. The weekend course is more of a fun, safe learning experience than an endurance event. If you have a group, you can book your own weekend or 2 night course during the week.

This is a 'hands on' course. The instructors will explain and demonstrate but you will get the opportunity to have a go at everything!

DIRECTIONS FROM EXETER
From Exeter, take junction 29 on the M5 and head towards Honiton on the A30. About 8 miles from Junction 29 you will see a brown road sign showing the turning for Escot. Turn left off the dual carriage way, turn right off the slip road, turn right after you pass under the dual carriage way, take the second turning on the left following signs for Fairmile (do not go back onto the dual carriage way). Turn right opposite the Fairmile Inn. Drive into Escot (between the stone pillars) and then take the left hand fork to the restaurant car park.
DIRECTIONS FROM THE EAST
Follow the A303 to the A30. Drive past Honiton. When you leave the built up area of Honiton, take the first slip road off the A30. Escot is marked on a brown road sign. Turn left at the end of the slip road. Keep going until you drive past a Memorial. Take the next left following signs for Fairmile (do not go back onto the dual carriage way). Turn right opposite the Fairmile Inn. Drive into Escot (between the stone pillars) and then take the left hand fork to the restaurant car park.

M42 - J9 - A446 - A 38 - Burton-on-Trent / Branston Junction. First left off island towards Tatenhill. Straight over cross roads in Tatenhill, to Rangemore village. We will meet outside the Church in Rangemore.

M1 to J24A. A50 to A38. South to Burton-on- Trent / Branston Junction. Third exit off island towards Tatenhill. Straight over cross roads in Tatenhill, to Rangemore village. We will meet outside the Church in Rangemore.
DIRECTION FROM THE NORTH WEST
M6 to J15 A500/A50 towards Uttoxeter / Derby. Turn onto the A515 at Sudbury heading for Lichfield. Come through Draycott-in-the-Clay, up the hill and take the second left at the six-lane junction onto the B5017. Follow this road towards Burton-on-Trent until you come to a traffic island with a Shell garage. Turn right towards Rangemore with the New Inn car park on your left. Take the next left and we will meet outside the Church in Rangemore.

Friday's Itinerary:

  • 7:00pm Safety Brief
  • 7:30pm Safe Cutting Techniques for knives, folding saws and bow saws.  Make Camp.
  • 8:00pm Make wooden pegs and put up tarp shelters.
  • 8:30pm Game Preparation (pigeon or pheasant), cook evening meal and eat.

Saturday's Itinerary

  • 7:00am Breakfast
  • 8:00am Cutting Techniques (making pot hangers, mallets and more advanced woodwork)
  • 9:00am Shelter Building (the shelters you make in this session will be the shelters you'll sleep in on the Saturday night)
  • 12:00pm Trout preparation - lunch
  • 2:00pm Fire Lighting.  This session is a favourite and includes natural and manmade tinder, fire lays, fire lighting techniques and friction fire lighting.
  • 4:00pm Rabbit or Squirrel Preparation (this is your evening meal which will be simmering for a few hours to make it the most tender meat you'll taste.  Delicious!)
  • 5:30pm Water preparation.  A very important topic if you're travelling and venturing out into out of the way places.
  • 6:30pm Natural Cordage.  Making string from plant fibres.
  • 7:00pm Evening meal and a chance to chill out after a very busy day.

Sunday's Itinerary

  • 7:30am Breakfast
  • 8:30am Pack kit and break camp
  • 9:00am Knife Law and Knife Sharpening
  • 10:00am Foraging.  Learning to identify edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, tree ID and tree uses.
  • 12:00pm All good things must come to an end and the course departs.

The skills and techniques you need to live in the wilderness are expertly demonstrated and explained so that you can master them before leaving the course. You need have no knowledge of survival skills to attend this course. This is learning through experience at its best.  Most people come on this course as individuals or pairs.  If you have a large group, please contact us for your own weekend.

The itinerary may change depending on the weather, but all subjects will be covered.

Water bottle (1 litre mineral water bottle will do)

Tea or Coffee + whitener (Please also bring your own seasoning for your meals)

Camera + Notebook + pen (optional)

PLEASE DO NOT BRING AXES, MACHETES, PARANGS etc.  You will be asked to leave them in your car.

Outdoor clothing
Outdoor clothing should be tough and comfortable. Wearing several thin layers is better than a few thick layers. A waterproof jacket and several sweatshirts underneath are sufficient. Jeans should not be worn, as they are slow to dry, clinging and cold. Natural colours or camouflage will give you a better chance of spotting wildlife. Walking boots are ideal, but wellies in wet weather and trainers in dry weather will suffice.

Please pack your torch, antibacterial wipes/soap and insect repellent at the top of your bag.

Food
You will be fed on Friday night, three meals on Saturday and Sunday breakfast. Alcohol is not permitted on this course.

You will not be posted any instructions.  Everything you need to attend the course is on this webpage and on the email that you will receive.  If you require anything further, please do not hesitate to get in touch and we'll be glad to assist.

Feedback and Complaints

Any feedback from you course is always welcome. If you have a complaint it should first be raised with the instructor running the course. If you are still not happy, please contact us in writing at the address above. We will always strive to amend our courses for the best experience for all concerned.

Certificates

Your certificate should be handed to you at the end of your course.  If not, your certificate will arrive with in 20 working days.  Certificates that are not handed out on the final day of the course are posted requiring a signature.  A claim can only be made against Royal Mail with in 60 days of postage.  Any replacement certificate will be charged at £5.
