Course Overview

Take your woodland skills into the realm of instruction with our Level 3 Wilderness Skills Range Instructors Qualification. This intensive, hands-on weekend is designed to develop your competence in axe throwing, teaching you the technical skills and coaching techniques needed to run your own throwing range. Under expert guidance, you’ll learn not just to throw safely and accurately — but to manage, instruct and maintain a throwing range of your own.

Whether you’re completely new to axe-range skills or already familiar with outdoor learning, this course will equip you with everything you need to confidently lead others, safely and professionally.

What You’ll Learn & Do

  • Range Setup & Safety Management: Learn how to set up a safe throwing range, plan risk assessments, and manage safety protocols for instructors and participants.
  • Equipment Selection & Maintenance: Understand which throwing axes to use, inspect and maintain equipment properly, and keep gear safe and effective.
  • Throwing Technique & Coaching: Develop your own throwing skills — accuracy, grouping, targeting — and learn to coach others through games, drills, and structured throwing sessions.
  • Instructor Practice & Session Leading: Get hands-on experience running short throwing sessions — assessing, instructing, giving feedback, and managing a group under supervision.
  • Tool Care & Range Maintenance: Learn how to care for targets, maintain a throwing range, and safely store and transport your equipment.

Why Choose This Course

  • Accredited Qualification: Earn a Level 3 NCFE CQ-certified qualification — a recognised credential if you want to offer axe or knife-throwing sessions professionally.
  • Practical, Immersive Training: This isn’t just theory — this weekend you’ll get fully hands-on training, including real throwing, range setup, and instruction practice.
  • Beginner Inclusive: No previous experience needed — the course is designed so that even new participants can build solid skills and confidence over the weekend.
  • Instructor Skillset: This course gives you the knowledge and skills not just to throw, but to safely run and supervise a throwing range — useful for bushcraft schools, events, or your own interests.

Ideal For

  • Anyone wanting to learn safe axe throwing techniques and range management.
  • Individuals planning to run or supervise their own outdoor throwing range — for sport, recreation, or bushcraft events.
  • Bushcraft enthusiasts looking to deepen their skills and expand into teaching or guiding.
  • People wanting a recognised instructor-level qualification for woodland axe throwing and safety.

Outdoor clothing

Outdoor clothing should be tough and comfortable. Wearing several thin layers is better than a few thick layers. A waterproof jacket and several sweatshirts underneath are sufficient. Jeans should not be worn, as they are slow to dry, clinging and cold. Natural colours or camouflage will give you a better chance of spotting wildlife. Walking boots are ideal, but wellies in wet weather and trainers in dry weather will suffice.

Food

You will also need to bring food for the weekend (2 x breakfast, 1 x lunch and 2 x evening meals). You can cook over the camp fire, or you can bring your own stove. Hot water is provided as the kettle will be over the fire all through the course.
