Course Overview

Unlock your creativity and deepen your wood-craft skills with our Level 3 Wood Carving Course. This hands-on weekend is designed to teach you how to transform raw wood into practical or artistic items — whether that’s a spoon, a bowl, a harpoon point, a figure or another carved project. Under experienced guidance, you’ll learn not just how to carve, but how to choose the right wood and tools for the job.

Whether you’re a total beginner or already have some carving or bushcraft experience — this course gives you both the confidence and competence to carve wood safely and effectively, whether green or seasoned timber.

What You’ll Learn & Do

  • Wood & Project Selection: Learn how to select a piece of wood suitable for your chosen project — whether simple or ambitious.
  • Safe Tool Use & Variety of Carving Instruments: Use and master knives, crook-knives, draw knives, axes (and other cutting tools) safely and effectively — essential skills whether carving small items or shaping larger pieces.
  • Project Work — From Concept to Finished Object: Work through planning, shaping and finishing a carved item (spoon, bowl, tool, art piece or similar), from selecting wood to final finishing.
  • Tool Maintenance & Carving Technique: Learn how to sharpen and maintain your carving tools to keep them effective and safe for repeated use — a core skill for anyone serious about wood-craft.

Why Choose This Course

  • Accredited Qualification: Gain a recognised Level 3 NCFE CQ certificate — a formal credential that demonstrates your wood-carving skills and understanding of tool safety and technique.
  • Hands-On, Practical Weekend: This isn’t a demonstration or classroom-only course — you’ll be working with real wood, real tools, and real projects from start to finish.
  • Broad Skill Set: Whether you want to carve functional objects (spoons, bowls, tools) or artistic pieces — the skills you learn are versatile and applicable to a wide range of wood-craft and bushcraft uses.
  • Accessible to All Levels: You don’t need previous carving experience. The course is suitable if you’re new to carving, but also beneficial if you already have some experience and want to improve.

Ideal For

  • Anyone interested in learning safe and effective wood carving — beginners or those with some prior experience.
  • Bushcraft and outdoor-life enthusiasts who want to add wood-carving skills to their repertoire.
  • People interested in making functional wooden items (bowls, spoons, tools) or crafting art/utility items from wood.
  • Those who want a recognised qualification in wood-craft and tool-use safety, backed by NCFE CQ accreditation.

Outdoor clothing

Outdoor clothing should be tough and comfortable. Wearing several thin layers is better than a few thick layers. A waterproof jacket and several sweatshirts underneath are sufficient. Jeans should not be worn, as they are slow to dry, clinging and cold. Natural colours or camouflage will give you a better chance of spotting wildlife. Walking boots are ideal, but wellies in wet weather and trainers in dry weather will suffice.

Food

You will also need to bring food for the weekend (2 x breakfast, 1 x lunch and 2 x evening meals). You can cook over the camp fire, or you can bring your own stove. Hot water is provided as the kettle will be over the fire all through the course.
